Samples from Caroline Seamount in the Western Pacific Ocean

Scientists have begun exploring the Caroline seamount for the first time and have collected samples through the use of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Among these samples were a rare yellow sponge and a delicate “Venus flower basket” sponge that measure 80 centimeters and 50 centimeters, respectively. “Discovery”, the ROV carried by Kexue, did a detailed exploration of the south side of the Caroline seamount and found over 50 biological samples, two rock samples, and deep-sea water samples during its seven-hour operation.
