Extraordinary “Forest of the Weird” 7,700 feet beneath the surface of the Deep Monument Waters around Johnston Atoll expedition
A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) discovered a deep-sea “forest” that is roughly 2,360 meters (7,740 feet) deep. The community was composed almost exclusively of glass sponges (both alive and dead), as well as deep-sea “dandelion animal” (which is not one organism but loads and loads of individuals living and working together). This discovery took place during an excursion on July 25, as part of the “Laulima O Ka Moana: Exploring Deep Monument Waters Around Johnston Atoll expedition”, which wrapped up on August 2.
