Cold water coral reefs that could be up to 4,000 years old discovered off west coast

Using the Holland I remotely operated vehicle (ROV), researchers have discovered cold water coral reefs during the latest expedition at the furthest reaches of Irish waters. Among these reefs was Solenosmilia variabilis, which was located 1,600 meters below sea level, deeper than it had ever been recorded and in much more sizable formations. According to the chief scientist on the expedition, the reef was extremely important because it takes around one year for it to increase in size by one millimeter. Hence, it could be up to 4,000 years old. Covering 1,000 nautical miles, researchers used the ROV fitted with LED lights, high definition cameras, and a range of tools that allow it to film, measure, and gather samples at depths of up to 3km.
